Overuse Strain? Chiropractic Care Eases the Pain!
An overuse injury refers to damage to a muscle, tendon, ligament, joint or bone caused by repetitive stress or strain without sufficient time for recovery. The injury is caused by repeated micro-trauma, rather than a single injury event, which causes tiny tears in muscle fibres, stress on a tendon, or bruising of a bone. It is most commonly seen with overtraining among athletes (too great a training load and insufficient recovery periods between loads) and individuals with specific job-related tasks.
Overuse injuries typically start with a slight pain or discomfort during an activity that is often ignored. Left untreated, it progresses to pain that persists after the activity or even occurs outside of the activity. Symptoms typically include pain, swelling, decreased range of motion and tightness in the affected area.
Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis): Characterized by pain and tenderness on the outer side of the elbow, often caused by repetitive forearm motions.
Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis): Pain and discomfort on the inner side of the elbow, typically resulting from repetitive wrist flexion or gripping activities.
Runner's Knee (Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome): Pain around the kneecap due to overuse, commonly seen in runners or athletes with repetitive knee movements.
Achilles Tendonitis: Inflammation or irritation of the Achilles tendon caused by repetitive stress, common among runners or athletes involved in jumping sports.
Shoulder Impingement: Pain and discomfort in the shoulder due to repetitive overhead motions, often seen in athletes or individuals with jobs involving constant overhead movements.
Shin Splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome): Pain along the shinbone, typically experienced by runners or individuals engaged in high-impact activities. This pain is the result of small tears and inflammation in the muscles, tendons and bone tissue around your shin.
Plantar Fasciitis: Inflammation or irritation of the plantar fascia in the foot, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the toe, leading to stabbing pain near the heel, often due to repetitive stress on the foot's arch or tight calve muscles. Plantar fasciitis can be caused by several factors, including type of shoes, foot structure, walking surfaces and overuse. The main symptom of plantar fasciitis is heel pain.
Stress Fractures: Small cracks or hairline fractures that form in bones are typically caused by repetitive stress, overuse, or increased physical activity without adequate rest or recovery time. Unlike acute fractures resulting from a single traumatic event, stress fractures develop gradually due to repetitive force or stress on a bone. They commonly occur in weight-bearing bones such as the shin, feet, ankles, or lower leg, often affecting athletes engaged in high-impact activities like running, jumping, or dancing.
Repetitive stress injuries will result in muscle weakness, pain and restricted mobility, leading to stiffness in your soft tissues and joints. Chiropractors use their expertise in the musculoskeletal system to accurately diagnose and treat the sources of overuse injuries. Chiropractic enhances the healing process for your injuries by:
Improving flexibility, strength and range of motion
Reducing inflammation and swelling
Relieving pain
Freeing up restricted joints
Optimizing the function of your nerves and nervous system
Specialized treatments such as IASTM, help to break up scar tissue that builds up from repetitive microtrauma, relieving pain and stiffness.
Being proactive with prevention and early treatment will help you recover much quicker.
